How it works
Three steps, and the second one is where people go wrong.
Most first sessions find nothing, and it is almost always one of two things. Here is how to avoid both.

Gel, generously
A layer of water-based ultrasound gel across the lower abdomen. Sound will not pass without it, and skimping is the single most common reason a first session finds nothing. Your gel is in the box.

Go low, and go slow
Hold the probe flat against the skin, start just above the pubic bone, and move it slowly. Moving too fast is the other reason people miss it.

Listen together
Once you find it, hold still, bring the volume up, and let the reading settle. This is the part worth waiting for.

It was never meant to be listened to alone.
The speaker is the point. A partner who has had nothing to do for three months suddenly has something. Grandparents two states away get put on speakerphone.

When can you start?

Before then the baby is small and sits low in the pelvis, which is why early sessions are usually silent. Body composition and where the placenta has settled both change how long it takes.
None of that means anything is wrong. It means the sound has further to travel.
- Second trimester onward Most people first hear something from around twelve weeks. Earlier attempts are usually silent simply because of size and position.
- An anterior placenta adds time If the placenta has settled at the front, it sits between the probe and the baby and can add weeks before anything is audible.
- Position changes week to week Somewhere that worked last week may find nothing this week. Start low and sweep slowly rather than returning to the same spot.
- Gel is not optional Ultrasound gel is what lets the sound pass through. Without it the probe will not pick anything up at all, which is why we put a bottle in the box.
What it is not
Straight about the limits.
The Ounora Doppler is for listening and for bonding. It is not a diagnostic device. It does not assess your baby's health, it does not replace a scan, and it does not replace a single prenatal appointment.
If you are worried about anything at all, including because of something you did or did not hear on this device, contact your midwife or doctor.
- Not hearing a heartbeat at home means the probe has not found it. It does not mean anything else.
- Use it in short sessions rather than continuously.
- It is not a substitute for any part of your prenatal care, and it never replaces professional advice.

When will I be able to hear anything?
Most people first hear something from around twelve weeks. Before that the baby is small and sits low in the pelvis, so sessions are usually silent. If the placenta has settled at the front it can take several weeks longer.
I could not find it. Is something wrong?
No. It means the probe has not found it, and that is common, especially early on. Use more gel, start low above the pubic bone, and move slowly rather than returning to one spot.
This device cannot tell you anything about your baby's health. If you are worried for any reason at all, contact your midwife or doctor.
What comes in the box?

Can my partner hear it too?
Yes. There is a built-in speaker with up and down volume buttons, so anyone in the room can listen at the same time. You do not need headphones or an app.
Does this replace my scans or appointments?
No. It does not replace a scan, an appointment, or any part of your prenatal care. Keep every appointment exactly as scheduled.
What if it is not right for me?
You have 60 days from delivery. Email support@ounora.com within that window and we will send return instructions. On a change of mind you cover return postage and there is no restocking fee. If it arrived faulty, damaged or wrong, we pay and send a prepaid label.
How long does delivery take?
